Social Justice Group

The Chicago School of Professional Psychology sponsors the Social Justice Group as a voluntary student interest group of men and women who would like to discuss, learn, read, explore, organize, and participate in the various ways that Psychologists and other mental health practitioners can bring their knowledge and skills to counter injustice and promote greater equality in society.

The premise of the Social Justice Group is that psychological work is a social practice that both expresses and influences the values and agendas of the political, economic and cultural institutions of the societies in which we live. Refusing to accept the definition of individuals as discrete centers of experience and action, the Group embraces the implications and the responsibilities of viewing psychological processes as fundamentally interpersonal, social, cultural, and political. For example, self, gender, and race are viewed as socially constructed rather than as natural biologically determined categories.

The mission of the Social Justice Group is primarily educational. We seek to educate ourselves and our colleagues about issues of injustice, including racism, classism, sexism, prejudice, militarism, economic exploitation, and relations of dominance. In addition, we seek to learn how to contribute as psychologists and citizens to the betterment of individuals and society in ways that are consistent with principles of fairness, human dignity, and compassionate concern for others.

All members of the Chicago School of Professional Psychology community are eligible to join in our activities.
